The Macao SAR Government signed the Cooperation Agreement on Joint Promotion of Projects for the Disabled with the China Disabled Persons’ Federation and the China Foundation for Disabled Persons on 30th March this year in order to promote cooperation of Macao and mainland China in the affairs of the disabled. The first working project in respect of sport development programs for the disabled has been launched. On 20th May, a track-and-field representative team comprising 14 coaches and athletes was sent by the Macao Special Olympics Committee to the Beijing Disabled Sport Administrative Centre for pre-match trainings as part for their preparation for the 13th Special Olympics World Summer Games which was held in Athens, Greece between 25th June and 4th July. While the team was in Beijing, they also participated in the 2011 National Special Olympic Track-and-field Competition as part of the warm up to the World Summer Games..

The Macao Sport Development Board (MSDB) has always supported and encouraged the participation of the disabled in sports. In the area of competitive sport, MSDB works closely with the related associations to ensure smooth implementations of their plans and offers support and coordination in pre-match training, participation in international competitions and provision of training venues, etc. Furthermore, MSDB also assists the sport associations to organize sport delegations to participate in large-scaled multi-sport events such as the Paralympic Games, the Asian Para Games and the Special Olympics World Summer Games. The disabled athletes could achieve  rehabilitative growth through sport competitions, at the same time boost their self-esteems, to promote and strengthen the exchange of the disabled community; as a result they could be better integrated into the society. Meanwhile, for the purpose of promoting the active participation of the disabled in social activities, the MSDB has also organized a series of recreational events such as the Sport for All Fitness and Recreational Classes and the Macao Sports Day for the Disabled to enhance the public awareness and to build a harmonious and healthy society.
