Training Course in Sport Psychology

To promote the continuous development of sport and cultivate sports talent in Macao, the Macao Sport Development Board, the Macao Polytechnic Institute and the Macao Society of Sport Science and Physical Education jointly organised a course in sport psychology – ‘Psychological Aspects of Sport’ - from 17th to 19th July at the Macao Polytechnic Institute. The course was enthusiastically received with the attendance of over 80 persons including coaches, athletes, referees, Physical Education teachers, sports school students, and the administrative personnel of sports associations.

Sidónio Serpa, Professor of the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Human Kinetics, and former Chairman of the International Society of Sports Psychology was invited as instructor. The course was a comprehensive one, including topics like: the development of sports psychology throughout the world, the international organisation of sports psychology, sports excellence and psychological characteristics. high performance and mental suffering, the role of family and sports organisations, the coach and the psychologist, sport and the athlete’s personal development, mental training and psychological preparation, and the transition to life after high performance.

The opening ceremony of the course was held on 17th July. Among the guests were Mr. José Tavares, President of the Macao Sport Development Board; Mr. Yang Zaihuai, Director of the School of Physical Education and Sports of Polytechnic Institute, and Mr. Zhai Qun, Deputy Secretary-General of Macao Society of Sport Science and Physical Education, who presented souvenirs to Professor Sidónio Serpa on behalf of the organisers.

Through the said course, students could master the latest information on the development of sports psychology and apply the knowledge and methods of sports psychology to daily practice. The organisers will hold more relevant training courses in future in order to cultivate more talent in competitive sport and enhance the professionalism of sports personnel.
