Applying for Green Mark Certification for Sports Facilities

To carry out the policy of the Macao SAR and show support for environmental conservation, the Macao Sport Development Board is adopting measures to reduce emissions and energy consumption in its sports facilities. After accessing the needs and current situation of Macao, the Macao Sport Development Board decided to apply for the internationally recognized green certicificate –  the Green Mark for sports facilities in order to recieve worldwide acknowledgement and follow their regulations. The Olympic Sports Centre is chosen for the pilot project and this project will be carried out in all other qualified sports facilities gradually.

There are five major assessment criteria of the green label certification, namely energy usage amount efficiency, water usage amount efficiency, sustainable operations and management, indoor environmental quality, and other green features and innovation. To meet with the requirements of the Green Mark International Authorization Agency, the Building and Construction Authority (hereinafter referred to as BCA), the Macao Sport Development Board performed a series of monitoring and optimizing works to achieve higher degree of environment protection at the Olympic Sports Centre. We installed permanent monitoring instruments in the central air conditioning system of the Centre. We also pasted solar reflecting insulation film on glasses in the lobby and public area. Besides, we began to use energy saving LED light bulbs for illumination in frequently used areas, put recycling bins in the Centre and conducted environmental conservation education.

After we have adopted the above measures and made adjustment to the operation of the Centre, technicians of the BCA carried out on-site inspections and observations there. They agreed that the facility meets with their requirements and issued a temporary Green Mark certification.

We keep up with the efforts to improve and optimize the Olympic Sports Centre even after obtaining the temporary Green Mark certification in order to meet with the requirement of a permanent one.

Our major goals for promoting energy and environmental conservation are to optimize sports facilities on a sustainable basis and raise citizens’ awareness of environmental conservation in utilizing facitilities. Through this project, we not only contribute to building a greener world, but also offer a platform for citizens to learn and understand the importance of living a green life.
