The 2022 MGM Macao International Regatta will be held mid next month

The 2022 MGM Macao International Regatta, organized by the Sports Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and the Ursa Major Sailing Event Management, co-organized by the Marine and Water Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and the Macau Sailing Association, and title-sponsored by MGM, will be held from 13 to 16 January 2022. 37 teams from China and around the world will compete for the three championships. The 2022 MGM Macao International Regatta plays a positive role in continuing to promote the development of sports in Macao. The organizers are hoping to nurture marine sports in Macao, to enrich local sporting events, and to support the work in consolidating Macao as the “World Centre of Tourism and Leisure”.

A press conference of the 2022 MGM Macao International Regatta was held today (10 December) at the MGM Macau to announce the details of the event. Guests attending the press conference included: Mr. Pun Weng Kun, President of the Sports Bureau; Mr. Ma Man Wai, President of the Ursa Major Sailing Event Management; Mr. Kenneth Feng, President, Chief Strategic and Financial Officer of MGM; Mr. Wu Chu Pang, Head of Maritime Activities Department of the Marine and Water Bureau; Mr. Brian Sou, Chairman of Macau Sailing Association; along with other guests and members of the media.

The 2022 MGM Macao International Regatta comprises three competitions: the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta (IRC), Macao Cup International Regatta (Beneteau First 40.7) unified design group and the International Catamaran Invitational (Hobie16) unified design group. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta and the Macao Cup International Regatta will bring together 22 teams from China and various countries around the world, competing at the waters off south of Hac Sa Beach. 15 sailing teams participated in the International Catamaran Invitational (Hobie16) unified design group, will compete for the championship at the waters south of the Inner Harbour Channel off the Macau Science Center.

An international referee registered with the world title, certified by the World Sailing, has been invited to be the judge at the competition. Ancillary activities, such as fleet parade, photo competition, demonstration of sailing boats and parent-child workshop will also be held to allow residents to have a deeper understanding of the regatta, to increase their interest in sailing, and to promote marine sports in Macao.

In addition, a spectating activity will be held on Sunday, 16th January 2022. The ferry will depart from the Inner Harbour Ferry Terminal at 8am, head to the sea off the Macao Science Center, to view the participating fleet parade, and to watch the International Invitational Catamaran Tournament that follows at the same location, and then return to the Inner Harbour Ferry Terminal (the total journey is about 3 hours). Details of ticket distribution will be announced in due course.

To ensure that the event can be carried out under safe conditions, strict epidemic prevention measures will be implemented during the event. The organizers will continue to closely monitor the status of the epidemic and make arrangements for epidemic prevention in the event in accordance with the relevant guidelines and requirements issued by the Health Bureau.
