“Sports and Health Consultation Service Point” for Year 2010

On Sundays, the “Sports and Health Consultation Service Point” offers basic physical checkup service to the general residents and exercisers at different outdoor venues. The checkup service includes height, weight and blood pressure measurements and evaluation of physical fitness. Advice on sport practice, guidance on nutrition and other health information are provided to help improve the public’s awareness of health care and to carry out physical exercises in a more scientific manner.   

During the year of 2010, the Macao Sport Development Board has carried out this service on 48 Sundays. Number of people taking part in it amounted to 12,820, with an average of 267 person-times every Sunday, increased by 40.5% compared with year 2009. In year 2010, services have been provided to the general residents and exercisers at Luís de Camões Garden, Areia Preta Garden, Colina da Guia Municipal Park, Dr. Sun Yat Sen Municipal Garden, Flower Garden, Flower City Garden, Dr. Carlos d’Assumpção Garden, Triangular Garden, Leisure Zone at Avenida Marginal do Lam Mau, Leisure Zone at Praça de Ponte e Horta, Lou Lim Iok Garden, Leizure Zone at Bacia Norte do Patane and Iao Hon Market Garden.

In terms of location, highest numbers of examinees were found at Luís de Camões Garden, Flower Garden and Iao Hon Market Garden. However, largest percentage of examinees conducting regular exercise was found at the Colina da Guia Municipal Park, with the percentage reaching as high as 90%, whereas Dr. Sun Yat Sen Municipal Garden and Flower Garden both achieved over 80%. The percentage is relatively low in Leisure Zone at Praça de Ponte e Horta, Triangular Garden, Iao Hon Market Garden and Lou Lim Iok Garden. 

As far as the type of sport is concerned, most people preferred walking, followed by aerobic exercises or fitness dance, running, martial art, using physical exercise equipment and other activities such as badminton, biking, rope skipping, etc. 

In terms of duration, 70,7% of the examinees would exercise for 30 minutes or more; with 68.0% choosing to conduct exercises with low intensity.

The statistics also show that among the examinees, the percentage of those whose weight was at the normal level has increased to 53.8% compared with 52.1% in 2009.

To sum up, through the “Sports and Health Consultation Service Point”, we can gain a better understanding of the physical conditions and exercising habits of the residents; to provide them with information and advice on sports and health, which are helpful for them to conduct physical exercises in a more effective and safer manner and to achieve the aim of improving their physical conditions.
