Can playing Table Tennis Improve Eyesight?

Given the popularity of electronic products, everyone has at least one mobile phone. A possible consequence of the reliance on electronic products is weakened eyesight. It is claimed on the Internet that we can improve our eyesight by playing table tennis, but is that true? Can other ball games also achieve this effect?

If we compare an eye with a camera, an important component which functions to adjust the focal length is the ciliary muscle of the eye. When the ciliary muscle contracts, the curvature of a len increases to adjust our eyesight. Playing table tennis improves our eyesight as our ciliary muscle is trained. Some of the middle-aged and elderly suffer from presbyopia because the ability of their ciliary muscle to adjust itself deteriorates as they get older, while the primary symptom is hyperopia. By playing table tennis, we can adjust the focal length of our eyes as we look at a small moving object and as such the ability of our ciliary muscle to adjust itself is developed. By delaying the natural deterioration of their eyesight, the elderly can improve their vision.

For those who aged 40 or above, the adjustability of the ciliary muscle has clearly deteriorated, while children have very active ciliary muscles. Their adjustability of their eyes can reach +/- 1000. However, since they engage in long-lasting close-range works, such as looking at the monitor, their ciliary muscle gets too tense and cannot recover. As such, pseudo-myopia may be caused. While the adjustability continues to deteriorate gradually, pseudo-myopia may be developed into real myopia. For teenagers and children, the way to improve their eyesight is to have them avoid looking at a monitor for a long time. By playing table tennis, their focal length can alternate as a small ball moves. As they can train their ciliary muscle, they can delay the deterioration of the adjustability of their ciliary muscle.

In fact, in modern times, people always demand for intense eye focus. No matter what activities people engage in, they can postpone the deterioration of their vision with sufficient rest and by staying clear of a monitor from time to time.
