Glory in the Sports Field 2018 - The SAR Government Awards Athletes

In 2018, Macao athletes took part in various large-scale sports events and achieved brilliant results. In order to award these athletes, the SAR government held the 2018 Award Ceremony of Bonuses and Certificates of Merit to Outstanding Athletes and Coaches at the Fisherman's Wharf Convention and Exhibition Centre on January 18, granting prize money which amounted to over 5.7 million Patacas to 65 excellent athletes and 22 coaches and youth trainers / technical assistants. The Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng stated in his speech that the SAR government would continue to support the development of sports affairs and insist on securing Macao’s advantages in traditional sports events. It would also specifically help developing sports events which had great potential, so as to create conditions for Macao’s athletes to gain excellent results in international sports events.

In 2018, Macao athletes won brilliant results in large-scale events such as the Asian Games in Indonesia and various events in the World Championships and Asian Championships, etc. According to “High-level Sports Event Bonus Awarding Regulations”, in 2018, a total of 65 excellent athletes and 22 coaches and youth trainers/ technical assistants from teams which participated in events such as Wushu, cycling, karate, triathlon, dragon boat, Thai boxing, skiing and bodybuilding. They were awarded bonuses because of their excellent performances in 9 sports events. In addition, a total of 20 sports associations, 197 athletes and 52 coaches/ technical assistants were awarded certificates of merit.

The officiating guests attending this ceremony also included Director of the Ministry of Culture of the Central People's Government in the Liaison Office of the Macao Special Administrative Region Wan Su Cheng, Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Dong, Director of the Office of the Secretary for Social and Cultural Affairs  Ip Peng Kun, President of the Sports Bureau Pun Weng Kun, President of Macao China Sports and Olympic Committee Ma Iao Hang, Chairman of the Board of Directors Lou Keng Chio and Secretary General Chan Chak Mou, members of the Sports Committee and leaders of sports associations, etc.
