Lam Chi Man Defends Champion in Men's Badminton Singles Ao I Kuan Becomes the New Women's Badminton Champion

The final match of the 2018 Macau Open Badminton Championships took place on 27 January, when champions in a total of five events including the singles and doubles were decided. Lam Chi Man, a former Macao team member defeated Pui Pang Fong by a score of 2:1 and defended the championship in the men's singles. Lam, excited after winning the championship, stated, “I did my utmost to win each match as long as I was competing”. In the final of the women's singles, Ao I Kuan, aged 18, became the women's champion for the first time.

After 6 days of intensive competitions, the ultimate matches in five single events finally took place. In the matches between Lam Chi Man and Pui Pang Fong of men's singles, Lam Chi Fong won the first match by 21:13. Pui Pang Fong adjusted his strategies in the second match and both of them were once leading alternatively. Pui Pang Fong achieved a 2-point margin to won the match by 21:19, and tied with his opponents match score. In the final match, Pui Pang Fong made many mistakes unexpectedly after he had tied at 16 points. Lam Chi Man, whose physical strength had decreased, won another match by 21:16, and defended the championship successfully by the match score of 2:1. In the matches deciding the 2nd Runner-up, Iek U Ieong defeated Tai Kin Hei in two consecutive matches and won.

There were two new players in the women's singles final. Ao I Kuan and Ho Sut Ieng defeated their seniors Ng Weng Chi and Kong Hok Ian respectively to compete in the final. Eventually, Ao I Kuan, with her stable performance, won two matches by 21:19 and 21:13 to become the new best female player in Macao. Ng Weng Chi, having defeated Kong Hok Ian by 21:12 and 21:16 in the matches which decided the 2nd Runner-up.

In the final of women's doubles, Chau Ka Hei, partnering with Kong Hok Ian, defeated their teammates Ao I Kuan / Kuan Chi Leng by 21:14 and 21:11 and won the champion. Chau Ka Hei, partnering with Pui Pang Fong in the final of mixed doubles, defeated Leong Kin Fai / Ng Weng Chi after an intensive match for the gold medal. The ultimate final of men's doubles, Lam Chi Man / Leong Kin Fai, when competing against Chan Io Chong / Lei Io Meng, overcame adversity to win two consecutive matches and defended the championship.
