Indroduction

This regular marathon competition is the largest track and field event in Macao. Its long history dates to 1981 when it was first organised by a group of track and field enthusiasts from the Macao Panda Sports Association. Since then, the competition has been held annually in early December. The Macao Sport Institute (now Sports Bureau) and the Macao Athletics Association began to jointly organise this competition upon their establishment. The competition routes - which are not fixed and often adjusted every year - cover a total length of 42.195 kilometres. Ever since the Macao marathon competition was approved in 1990, the race course has been examined and certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

Participated athletes come from around the world. Best records: Men: STEPHEN CHEMLANY, Kenya, 2:12:49 (2011).  Women: TSEGA GELAW RETA, Kenya, 2:31:48 (2011).

A half marathon (21.0975 kilometres) and a mini-marathon (5 kilometres) were launched in 1997 and 1998, respectively.
