Strong performances all round on the third day of the 2020 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta & Macao Cup International Regatta
2020-01-11

The participating teams in the 2020 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta & Macao Cup International Regatta entered the third day of the competition fighting for leading positions in the standings. Todays’ daily awards for the Macao Cup International Regatta, the Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta and the International Catamaran Invitational went to Team Péan from France, Team Wink Culture Group from Hong Kong and Team Diva from South Korea respectively.

Today’s wind speed was relatively low at 4 to 6 knots, and together with highly variable gusts posed great challenges for the sailors to perform.

The fleets in the Macao Cup International Regatta and Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta took part in three rounds of course races in the waters south of Hac Sa Beach today. The highlight Macao Cup group has gradually become a three-way battle among Team Péan from France, Team Vivat Sailing from Russia and Team Windy from Estonia.  Consistent performance by Team Péan propelled them to today’s Daily Award.

In the Greater Bay Area Group, Team Wink Culture Group from Hong Kong has been putting up strong performances since yesterday, and made significant leaps to take the provisional pole in the overall standings.  Macau Sugram Seamo and BLU from Hong Kong took today’s second and third places.

The International Catamaran Invitiational continued in the waters south of the Inner Harbour Channel.  Team Diva recorded a win and a second-place finishes to snatch today’s winning trophy. Team Vayu from Thailand and Team Bluefin from Hong Kong completed the podium.

The top three in overall standings at the conclusion of Day 3 are as follows:

  • Macao Cup International Regatta: Péan(France) 8pts, Vivat Sailing(Russia) 14pts, Windy(Estonia) 15pts;
  • Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta: Wink Culture Group(Hong Kong) 8pts, BLU(Hong Kong) 10pts, Macau Sugram Seamo(Macao) 10pts;
  • International Catamaran Invitational: Vayu(Thailand) 14pts, Diva(South Korea) 21pts, Seaman(Thailand) 31pts.

All participating teams will demonstrate their best effort tomorrow to fight for the champions trophies of the event.  With higher wind speed and cooler temperatures expected, competitive actions are expected as the event approaches the finish line.

To allow residents to watch the racing action in close proximity and to experience the atmosphere of the event, a fleet parade will take place at 9am tomorrow.  The participating vessels will set sail from Macau Fisherman's Wharf, pass through Macao Science Center, Kun Iam Ecumenical Center and Governador Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, and return at Macao Tower.  Residents may watch the parade at various coastal locations such as Macao Science Center, Kun Iam Ecumenical Center and Estrada Nordeste da Taipa.  In addition, the organisers have arranged a spectating activity to watch the parade and the International Catamaran Invitational. Residents who have previously collected the tickets are requested to arrive at the Inner Harbour Ferry Terminal at 7:30am to board the spectating fleet.
