| 2008 Olympic Landscape Sculpture Designs Contest |
| The association between the Olympic Games and sculpture originated in the first Games. The first Olympic Games were held in Athens, a location in front of the Temple of Zeus. During that time, sculptures were placed everywhere. The scenery told that the Olympics are not only a sports event, but also a cultural and artistic event. In order to carry out the construction of “The People’s Olympics”, propagate the spirit of the Olympics, coordinate the promotion for the Games, fully develop and economically make use of the resources of landscape, as well as to generate cultural heritage for the Beijing Olympic Games, the Beijing Organizing Committee now hosts a three-year project – 2008 Olympic Landscape Sculpture Designs Contest and make it as one of the cultural highlights of the 2008 Olympics. The Beijing Organizing Committee collects landscape sculpture designs from around the world. So far, sculptors from nearly 90 countries and regions across the five continents have expressed their support for the contest, namely the USA, Canada, Peru, Chile, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Greece, Bulgaria, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, India, Bangladesh, Singapore, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Nearly 3000 designs have been collected at the moment. |
| The 2008 Olympic Landscape Sculpture International Tour Exhibition |
| The International Tour Exhibition is an Olympic cultural activity which will be run for three years. The event enjoys high priority of being displayed across the country and aboard aiming to arouse attention to the “People’s Olympics” among the general public throughout the nation, and to disseminate the spirit of the Olympics. 29 finalists will be generated from the opinion of experts and general public in different displaying locations. Gold, silver and bronze ranks will be given accordingly, and all winning works will be recommended to be part of the Olympic landscapes. Some outstanding pieces will be even displayed in permanent locations in the host cities as part of the urban construction and cultural constructions. By doing so, it is aiming to bring a closer look of the sculptures to the public and imprint the memory of Beijing Olympic Games into the mind of the people of China. |
| The 2008 Olympic Landscape Sculpture International Tour Exhibition in Macau |
The first round of the exhibition has been hosted in Beijing, Tianjin, Zhangchun Xiamen, Nanning, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. With the support and help of the Beijing Organizing Committee, Macau has also become one of the host cities, enabling Macau residents to experience personally the spirit of Olympics and the atmosphere of “People’s Olympics”. From January 24 to February 1, 2007, the exhibition will be held at the following locations: the Leal Senado Square, the Ruins of St. Paul, and the Macau Tourism Center (from the basement to the first floor). The exhibition will be held in Macau World Heritage sites so that the culture of Macau and the spirit of Olympics can be fused, adding more of Macau’s cultural characteristics to the exhibition as well as making the exhibition part of Macau residents’ life.
The exhibition will run for nine days, featuring 110 sculptures that presenting different concepts and forms. When attending the exhibition, Macau residents have the opportunity not only to vote for the works they appreciate, but also to take part in a photography contest. The photography contest enables the viewer to explore, from an artistic perspective, the thoughts of the artist and the meaning conveyed by the exhibit, and to reflect on what they have viewed, so as to meet the target of full participation in the Olympics. |
