The 20th Asian Table Tennis Championships

Sanctioned by the Asian Table Tennis Union, the 20th Asian Table Tennis Championships jointly organized by the Macao Sport Development Board of the Macao SAR Government and the Macao Table Tennis Association took place in the Macao Asian Games Dome from February 23rd to March 1st.

The Asian Table Tennis Championships are the most important event of the Asian Table Tennis Union. As the scale of this sport event is huge, with high standards, a strong level of competitiveness, a broad range of teams and athletes, the various participating Asian countries attach great importance to this event. The Championships are held once every two years in different countries and regions. Being held in Macao for the first time, the Asian Table Tennis Championships is an international high-level competition in the history of Macao table tennis. Teams from 28 countries and regions, including Asian table tennis powerhouse countries such as China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea took part in this tournament. The year’s Championships had the highest number of participants ever, with 112 male and 94 female athletes. As the host, Macao sent 7 men and 7 women to compete in different tournament events.

To deepen the local youth’s understanding of the Asian Table Tennis Championships and to set the atmosphere for the event, the organizers encouraged local students to participate in local original design by organizing the “20th Asian Table Tennis Championships Logo, Stamp and Commemorative Cover Design Competition” prior to the actual tournament.

After eight days of exciting competition, the 20th Asian Table Tennis Championships concluded on March 2nd. Mr. Cheong U, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao, Mr. João Ma Chi Tat, Mr. Van Kuan Lok, and Mr. O I Chau,  the respective Chairman, Vice-Chairman and President of the Macao Table Tennis Association presided over the award presentation ceremonies of Men’s Singles and Women’s Doubles Finals, the last two events on the tournament program. In addition, on February 25th, 26th, 28th and 29th, officials from the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU); Cai Zhenhua, President, Shahrokh Shahnazi and Khalil Al-Mohannadi, Deputy Presidents, the Hon. Treasurer D.R. Choudhary, and the Hon. Secretary General Tony Yue Kwong Leung, along with Mr. Koji Kimura, the Executive Vice-President of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), Mr. Chen Wu, Managing Director of China Telecom (Macao) Co., Ltd and Mr. Vong Iao Lek, President of the Macao Sport Development Board presented trophies for the Men’s Team and Women’s Team, Mixed Doubles, Men’s Doubles as well as Women’s Singles events respectively.
