2011 “Sport Health Advisory Stations”

The continuous development and progress of the local society has meant that local residents are placing an ever-increasing focus on the importance of their health and acknowledging that having a healthy body is important both to society and to their families. As many people like to exercise using the equipment available in public parks and hiking trails, the Macao Sport Development Board opened Sport-Health Advisory Stations in outdoor public spaces every Sunday, with the objective of providing consultation services on sports and health to the public, as well as publicize and promote Sport for All in order to encourage local residents to actively exercise and maintain a healthy body.

During the service hours of the Sport-Health Advisory Station, local residents were able to take free health tests carried out by professional staff members, including blood pressure measurements, heart rate measurements, weight tests, and body fat measurements. This gave them an opportunity to learn more about their health condition, through the patient explanation and guidance given by the professional staff, as well as obtain personalised exercise and nutritional plans, thereby allowing them to exercise in a safer and more efficient way, as well as improve their health. In addition to this, several instructors from the Sport for All Fitness and Recreational Classes gave demonstrations of various sports, including: sports dance, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, line dance, Taiqi softball, aerobic dance, Baduanjin and fitness exercises. Residents who showed interest were invited to participate, allowing them to come into contact with and experience different sports in order to let them feel the joy of partaking in physical exercise.

The Macao Sport Development Board altogether opened Sport-Health Advisory Stations on 45 Sundays in 2011, in the following locations: the Flora Garden, the Guia Hill (Guia Hill Lookout Point), the Camões Garden, the Iao Hon Garden, the Av. Marginal do Lam Mau Rest Area, the Flower City Garden, the Rua do General Ivens Ferraz Rest Area, the Park of Dr. Carlos d’Assumpçãom the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Muinicipal Park, and the Iao Hon District Municipal Market. The stations attracted the participation of a great many sports lovers and residents alike, serving a total of 13, 999 people, which reflects the strong support of the public.

According to the data received from the Sport-Health Advisory Stations and the data surveys carried out, more women participated in sporting activities and most of the participants were middle-aged and the elderly. It was also discovered that most people exercise for half an hour to one hour per session. We hope that the Sport-Health Advisory Stations can help encourage residents from all sectors of the community to develop the good habit of exercise, master the proper sports and exercise techniques, as well as improve their physical condition.
