Sio Chi Hong and Cheong Cheng I Become Best Players in Senior Singles

The Macau Senior Men and Women's Table Tennis Competition, organized biannually by the Macau Table Tennis Association, took place on 8 January. Champions in both the men's and the women's have changed. Sio Chi Hong demonstrated his strength and won over the previous champion Cheong Chi Cheng by 4:2, and gained his first championship in the senior men's table tennis singles. Cheong Cheng I, who returned to the final match, defeated Chong Weng I by the match difference of 3:1 and became the senior women's champion.

In the final of the senior men's singles, Cheong Chi Cheng, who was last year's two-time male champion, encountered Sio Chi Hong, who felt much more confident after having been promoted unexpectedly in the semi-final. Sio won the first match by 11:8 initially, then won another two matches by 12:10, during extra time. Sio was significantly leading with three winning matches. Cheong Chi Cheng, who did not give up, strove to win by overcoming his strong opponent. He caught up by winning two matches by 11:4 and 11:8 and he was also leading once by 7:2 in the 6th match. However, his advantage did not persist. Sio Chi Hong caught up gradually and tied with him at 8:8 and made critical offenses at key moments. Finally, he secured the win by 11:9, and won by the match score of 4:2. Sio became the senior men's champion for the first time. During the bronze medal match, Cheong Chi Chon defeated Cheang Tin Ngai in three consecutive matches and won the third place.

In the final of the senior women's singles, Cheong Cheng I, who had left table tennis for two years, returned to the competition. When facing Chong Weng I, who defeated Wong Chui Chi, who once defended the champion, in the semi-final, Cheong Cheng I lost the first match initially by 7:11. However, she soon found her footing and won the following four matches by 11:6, 13:11, 11:6 and 11:9, winning her first champion in a large-scale competition after returning. Wong Chui Chi then defeated Tam Sut Fei by 3:2 and became the 2nd Runner-up.
